What Does Iodine Do?
Iodine is an essential trace mineral necessary for the production of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4). Although approximately 80% of the dietary intake of iodine is sequestered by the thyroid gland, just about every tissue in the human body requires iodine. They include salivary glands, the stomach mucosa, the choroid plexus, the mammary glands, prostate tissue and the ovaries. In fact, every cell in our body has iodine receptors.
Additionally, published information suggests iodine/iodide supplementation helps to maintain healthy estrogen hormone ratios. Estrogen inhibits the absorption of iodine according to Jorge D. Flechas, MD.
Why We Need Iodine
Iodine is found severely lacking in the typical western diet to the point that medical testing has shown that 95% to 98% of Americans are deficient. Consequently, as a result of decreased iodine status, sufficient thyroxine cannot be produced by most people, negatively impacting thyroid function and the function of other tissues as well.
Our bodies use two types of iodine: Iodine and Iodide. IODIZYME-HP™ supplies 5 mg of iodine and 7.5 mg of iodide per scored tablet.
NOTE: The Journal of the American Medical Association in 1976 stated that studies indicate using thyroid hormones (Synthroid, Levoxyl and even dessicated thyroid) without adequate Iodine intake can increase the chances of breast cancer and maybe other cancers as well.

What happens if I do not have enough iodine?
A low intake of iodine over a long period of time may cause the thyroid gland in the neck to increase in order to trap iodine; this swelling may be visible and is known as goiter.
It is more likely that having too little iodine in your diet will lead to low levels of thyroid hormones. If you have a deficiency of iodine when you are pregnant, your baby’s brain may not develop as well as it could and this could affect your child’s ability to learn in later years; for instance, your child could have a lower IQ or poorer reading ability.
