What is Menopause?

Menopause is a normal transition phase in the life of a woman that technically is defined as the end of menstruation. Once referred to by many as “the change,” menopause is really not a moment, but a process that can take a decade or more for some women. Menopause is a natural biological phenomenon, not an illness or a diseased condition. However, it can result in significant physical, and emotional symptoms that can be quite uncomfortable for some women, while others experience little or no ill effects. The process begins at different ages for each woman, and it may last longer or shorter for some. But the official measure of when you have reached menopause is when you have not had a period for twelve consecutive months. For much of the world’s history, most women did not live beyond menopause, so it was negatively associated with the end of youth and the end of fertility and motherhood. Today we are living much longer, and the stigma of menopause is gone in the mind of most. In fact, many women today will live half their lives after menopause.
