Cold or frozen, organic grapes rank as one of the most healthy fruit snacks one can eat. Most people find grapes naturally sweet, juicy and refreshing. An interesting fact that many may not know is that grapes that are consumed “as is” or used in recipes are called table grapes as opposed to wine grapes (used in viniculture) or raisin grapes (used to make dried fruit).
Organic grapes are usually classified as low on the glycemic index, with a GI value ranging between 43-53. Recent studies show that the low GI value of grapes is a good indicator of the blood sugar benefits that organic grapes provide. Studies also connect the intake of organic grapes to better blood sugar balance, better insulin regulation, and increased insulin sensitivity.
Why Organic Grapes?
A recent study in July of 2014 found that organic food contains more of the antioxidant compounds linked to better health than regular food, and lower levels of toxic metals and pesticides. The results are based on an analysis of 343 peer-reviewed studies from around the world – more than ever before – which examine differences between organic and conventional fruit, vegetables and cereals. “The crucially important thing about this research is that it shatters the myth that how we farm does not affect the quality of the food we eat,” said Helen Browning, chief executive of Soil Association, which campaigns for organic farming.
Organic Grapes and Resveratrol
Resveratrol, a polyphenic bioflavonoid antioxidant, found in the skins, flesh and seeds of grapes and produced by other plants and foods is known to stop the effects of aging. Classified as a phytoestrogen, resveratrol also has the ability to positively interact with estrogen receptors. It’s interesting to note that plants that produce resveratrol as well as other types of antioxidants do so as a protective mechanism and response to stressors (causing the release of stress hormones) within their environments. These stressors include radiation, invading/harmful insects or other predators, injury as well as fungal infections. Presently, resveratrol is thought to be one of the most influential polyphenols and a strong defender against signs associated with aging and free radical damage. Resveratrol has also been shown to increase expression of three genes all related to longevity.
